As you first start training you’re bound to notice some physical changes right away. A big one for the women is seeing your hands develop rough patches of skin known as calluses.

Man hands, gym hands whatever it is you want to call them, and whether you like them or not, calluses happen for a reason.

Calluses develop due to pressure or friction. When you hold weighted bars it’s the base of your fingers that will develop this thicker skin. They are a necessary part of the process for building up strength from gripping bars. They develop to protect your hands from blisters. They are there to help.

I get told a lot by clients that they don’t want them, that their hands are feeling rougher and need to buy some gloves. I won’t tell you not to buy gloves, they’re sold for a reason and if it’s truly something you would like to avoid I’m sure you can find some gloves you like.

(Just be sure you pick some that you can still get a good grip with while wearing. Don’t just go for some that look pretty!)

I remember when I first told my mom I had starting lifting weights at university. She went out and bought me a pair of hot pink gloves to protect my hands. I was grateful but I only used them once. I enjoy the feel of the bar directly in my hand. I like feeling the raw feeling as I perform a deadlift gripping the bar with my bare hands. I won’t lie, I questioned them at first but I’ve  learnt to embrace my rougher palms. I honestly now see them as a badge of honour! I’ve worked hard to build up my strength, I’ve held on so dam hard when I felt bars slipping. My calluses developed to help me and help me they have.

I want to clear one thing up. I’m not talking about huge, thick calluses or big patches of raised rough skin. Those extremes aren’t necessary and can actually tear causing more problems. You don’t have to let them build up to a point where they’re noticeably thick. Simply keep care of them, use a pumice when showering to file them down (just be sure not to take it all off). Finish with a good hand moisturiser to keep the skin soft and cared for.

I love feeling strong and wear my calluses with pride. I now encourage you ladies to do the same!!
