Overcome your fear of the gym
We all know exercise is good for us, that going to the gym and working out is going to improve our health. But if you don’t know what to DO in the gym while there, it can be daunting. Maybe you’ve walked into the gym with no plan and left half an hour later with a bruised ego. You may have a membership, determined to use it, but you just never do, or perhaps you walk in and always drift to the safe option of cardio.
It can be a little intimidating to begin something new or to change what you know best. Gyms can be overwhelming, the equipment looks scary and complicated to use, and everyone around you seems to know exactly what they’re doing.
If that’s how you feel, you’re not alone so here are a few things to consider before getting started
1. Everyone feels self-conscious. From the huge guy in the stringer to the thin guy on the treadmill, or the fit girl on the stepper.
2. Most people will be too focused on themselves to even take notice of you.
3. Lots of people will applaud you for trying. Everyone has to start somewhere! You’re there to better yourself, as everyone else is.
4. Some will judge. Not just you, but everyone in the gym. Some people just can’t help but compare themselves to others; it’s the same inside and out of the gym… and who cares? You’re there for you!
Now that’s said, here are my top tips for getting started:
1. Have a plan. There are so many detailed workout plans online for beginners. Yes they’re generalised but it’s a good way to get started and will give you some structure so you know what you’re doing and how long for.
2. Have a back up plan. Standing around aimlessly can be painfully uncomfortable, so if someone’s using the equipment you need, have a backup!
3. Research. Look online at tips on form and technique. If you can have a go at performing the movement without weights you’ll feel so much more confident when you do start adding weight.
4. Ask. If you can’t find something or are unsure of how to use something, don’t be afraid to ask. The instructors in the gym are there to help, so let them help you.
5. Comfort. Choose clothes you feel comfortable in. Whether it’s shorts and a tank top or lose joggers and a baggy top, as long as it’s exercise appropriate, wear what’s best for you.
6. Music. Set up a great playlist before you get to the gym. Songs that make you feel good, and determined. Zone out and get it done.
The longer you put it off, the scarier it becomes. Take pride in having the willpower and motivation to become a stronger version of yourself.
